Governor Abbott Announces Over $1.1 Million In Career Training Grants For Four Alamo Area Schools

Governor Greg Abbott today announced four Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants totaling $1,113,310 have been awarded to four schools in the Alamo area by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). The JET grants will support career and technical education (CTE) training programs by helping the schools purchase and install equipment to initially train 202 students for high-demand occupations such as construction managers, registered nurses, and more.

“These JET grants give Alamo-area students the tools they need for high-demand careers,” said Governor Abbott. “Texas will equip the next generation with the skills that lead to better jobs and bigger paychecks. I thank the Texas Workforce Commission and these schools for their work to prepare students for the jobs Texas employers need.”

“Closing the skills gap starts with providing our students with the right tools at the right time,” said TWC Chairman Joe Esparza. “These four JET grants will empower schools in the Alamo area to expand their CTE programs, offering students a direct path to high-demand careers as registered nurses and construction managers.”

Earlier today, TWC Commissioner Representing the Public Brent Connett presented the awards at a ceremony attended by state and local officials as well as school staff at Palo Alto College.

The four JET grants include:

• Ingram Independent School District (ISD): a $91,768 grant to train 37 students as construction managers in partnership with St. Philip’s College.
• Poth ISD: a $331,792 grant to train 45 students as nurses in partnership with Palo Alto College.
• Southside ISD: a $339,750 grant to train 60 students as nurses in partnership with Palo Alto College.
• Southwest ISD: a $350,000 grant to train 60 students as nurses in partnership with Palo Alto College.

Through funding provided by the Texas Legislature each biennium, TWC uses JET grants to defray start-up costs to develop or expand career and technical education programs for public community, state and technical colleges, school districts, and open-enrollment charter schools. Equipment funded through JET grants must be used to train students for jobs in high-demand occupations. JET grant awards for the current fiscal year have yet to be announced and will be published in the coming months.
